Following this period, especially since the 1970s, American experiences have been rethought in numerous ways - as feminist historians have become a dominant voice in academia and, even in some social studies of women, major paradigms of American history have changed.

Contemporary historians have made strides in our understanding of the role of women in the United States throughout the centuries. In addition, there have been important changes in our thinking about race and gender, especially as a result of the efforts of the women's movement. In its unfinished march, however, there is much more to be explored and understood - especially to understand the relationship between race, sex, and gender in novel and surprising ways.
