Flixter, a film discovery app, is used by 25 million users per month and has been downloaded more than 35 million times. Flixter also owns Rotten Tomatoes, the movie review site which has over 12 million unique visitors per month. Time Warner didn't disclose how much it paid, but the company was reportedly looking for $60 million to $90 million.
Today on the earnings call CEO Jeff Bewkes said he \"wants to advantage more profitable distribution channels\" and that the company is \"working hard to make digital ownership more compelling to consumers.\" Here's how that translates: Bewkes wants to encourage more people to *buy* digital films, which bring higher margins than rentals, and far higher margins than streaming a movie on say, Netflix. By allowing people to connect with friends about their entertainment libraries and easily browse what else is out there, as Flixter does, Time Warner aims to drive higher sales.
UltraViolet allows people who buy compatible DVDs and Blu-ray discs to also get a copy of a movie stored online that they can access on compatible Internet-connected devices. Warner and other studios are counting on the new technology to encourage people to keep buying movies, instead of renting or illegally pirating them, in the digital age.
The last time rental revenues beat purchases was in 2000, before people slowed their rentals of VHS tapes and began buying more DVDs. The DVD first came out in 1995 and led to a revolution where people replaced their home libraries of video cassettes for the thinner, lighter discs that lasted longer.
This isn't the first time that Murdoch has walked away from a deal that he once seemed to prize. In 2008, he gave up on buying DirecTV in 2008 through another company, News Corp., after Liberty Media Corp. chairman John Malone outmaneuvered him. He also withdrew a bid to boost News Corp.'s stake in British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC in 2011 amid outrage over a phone hacking scandal at News Corp.'s British newspapers.
Now you can celebrate the occasion by buying tickets to see the series finale of the new 'Sherlock', titled 'The Final Problem', in cinemas on Sunday January 15 at the same time as it's being broadcast on TV.

During my first workshop that I led at Inseec Bordeaux in January 2015 about product management, I was thinking how that could be interesting to build a case study about digital products that I built during my time at MK2. The idea is to explain steps of building / deploying products but also give details about success and failures.
I started to go inside movie theaters at different times and saw what happen when people were buying tickets. But also what kind of problems salesmen had to deal with and what was the level of stress (customers or salesman) for peak time.
I organized interviews with managers of accounting and legal department at MK2 headquarter. I wanted to get more information about dataflow. But also understand rules and legal requirements of movie theater business (ex: National Centre for Cinema / ticketing provider).
The best way to solve pain point about waiting time to buy ticket is probably to build a check point where people have to show their e-ticket (printed by themself or on their mobile phone) without going to a cashdesk before. This requires dedicated theater employees in charge of scanning bar-code at the check point. Some theaters already use this way like Gaumont Pathé in Paris. 59ce067264
