The first Pontiac car was produced in 1926 and it was called 6-27. It could go 50 miles per hour and its price was $825. It was the beginning of a new era of comfortable and fast cars. Of course, you're likely to search for a newer version of the car and you won't need a special decoder for the old combinations of numbers and letters. In 1981 a universal standard of identifying the vehicles was adopted by the NHTSA in the USA. To find out the information about the assembly of the vehicle and the equipment, you will only need to ask for a 17-digit code that is easily deciphered with the Pontiac VIN decoder.
The 'H' code in the middle of the serial number indicates the car was originally equipped with a Hydra-Matic transmission. An 'S' would indicate a standard transmission (An interesting side note, only ten 56 Safaris and four 57 Safaris are known to have been produced with standard transmissions).
The remaining digits after the transmission code, '15431' in our example, represent the serial number for the car as it came off the assembly line at that particular Pontiac assembly plant. Serial numbers were issued by each assembly plant for each car of a given transmission type.
See theMaster Parts Catalog for serial numbers used at each Pontiac assembly plant. For all plants except the Pontiac MI plant (code P), see "Assembly Plant Serial Numbers" beginning on page 18. For serial numbers used at the Pontiac MI plant, see "Car Model Information" beginning on page 7.
The VIN number which is also known as the chassis number or serial number of the vehicle is a 17-character alphanumeric code. This alphanumeric code differs from vehicle to vehicle and is assigned by the manufacturer to each vehicle. The VIN number is then used to store information about the vehicle. The Pontiac VIN lookup tool can decode any Pontiac VIN number and can present the year, make, engine, fuel, transmission, add-ons and features and where the Pontiac was manufactured.
The VIN check Pontiac tool provides all the information contained in the VIN number. For instance, the first character of the 17-character alphanumeric code represents the country of origin. Then, the second and third character provides manufacturer details. Following this, characters from fourth to eight provides information about the engine size, engine specifications, and type of the vehicle. The Pontiac VIN number also contains the vehicle serial number in its last 6 characters.

2) It looks like you are in Pennsylvania and I don't know what their rules are for changing VIN numbers. I had a similar problem with my '30 Pontiac. They used the engine number as the VIN. I wanted to change to the serial number on there frame in case I ever had to replace the engine. I had to get a peace officer to look at the numbers sign a form documenting the change. I hope it is not a huge problem in your state. So first step would be to contact your state DMV.
3) I do keep a registry of '32 Pontiacs which now number about 75. I say about because I do not have serial numbers for all cars and think I have some duplicates. My guess of the number of running cars (go into garage and be assured it will start and drive) is probably in the neighborhood of 30. 2b1af7f3a8
