Created back in 2001 this operating system became extremely popular in very little time. People at levels enjoyed the features and praised the applicability of this Operating System. Since the first day of launch until today, the popularity graph has kept ascending. Although Microsoft 2011 is no longer supporting the OS still many users prefer using Windows XP more than the other operating systems available on the market. The problem of updates also persists but fame and satisfaction remain unrivaled. For the users of XP who want some kind of update the option of using the Serial XP product key is there so that they can get the updates and enjoy working with this OS. If the user has the option of Serial XP in the system, then there is no need to worry.
In the case of the former, there is no need to have a product key. The copy of Windows can be easily installed without using a key. The latter on the other hand shows that the user has access to the retail edition of the Operating System. In this condition, it is very important to have a proper key if you want to install this Operating System.
If the user has bought the original version of the Windows XP CD/DVD, the serial key is written on it. If there is no serial key or the source of installation is not original, then it would become really hard to find the product key.
Microsoft is known for making use of several encryptions. It is an ordeal in finding the product key manually. Hence, the user needs to check other options available for this purpose as well. The two popular alternatives in this regard are as follows:

The other day I installed windows XP Mode on my Laptop and everything's working fine. But the countdown has begun ti'll Windows XP shuts itself down unless I put in the product key. But here's the thing. When installing Windows XP Mode instead of showing up in Program Files it's showing up in Program Files 86x. I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be that big of a deal but the text file that has my Windows Product Key isn't showing up in it. The file I found is called "Windows Virtual PC" and the only 2 things in it are "Virtual XPVHD" and another file named "Integration Components" which leads to 2 disk image files "IntegrationComponents" and "Precompact"
When you install Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, the media must match the product key. That is, the channel (MSDN, retail, OEM, Volume License, and so on), the SKU (Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and so on), and the language (English, French, and so on) must match between the product key and the media. It is necessary so that you can successfully enter the product key. If the installation media does not match the product key, you receive the following error message:
If you use a "leaked" product key (a product key that is known to be available to the public) to deploy Windows XP across multiple computers (a Volume Licensing installation), you might be unable to install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later versions of Windows XP, or automatically obtain updates from the Windows Update Web site. For example, you might receive the following error message when you install Windows XP SP1 and later versions of Windows XP:
You must have a valid product key before you can use the information in this article. To obtain a valid product key, click the following link to contact the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center:
This article describes two methods for how to change the Windows XP product key after a Volume Licensing installation to resolve the issue. One method uses the Windows Activation Wizard graphical user interface (GUI) and the other method uses a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) script. The Activation Wizard method is easier. However, if you must change the product key for multiple computers, the script method is more suitable.
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:322756 How to back up and restore the registry in WindowsIf you only have a few volume licensing product keys to change, you can use the Activation Wizard.
If you must change the product key for multiple computers, we recommend this method. You can create a WMI script that changes the volume licensing product key, and then deploy this script in a startup script.
The script method is the practical solution for changing the product keys on a large number of machines. Regardless of the method you choose, make sure to backup important data before changing a product ID, since an unexpected problem could render the machine unbootable and necessitate a complete reinstallation of Windows.
In the right pane, right-click the ODBETimer binary value and select Modify. Change at least one character of this value to either a number from 0 to 9 or to a letter from A to F, then click OK and close the Registry Editor. This renders the current product key invalid and deactivates Windows.
Select the option to telephone a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows, as shown in Figure A, and click Next. Now, select the Change Product Key option and enter your new product key as shown in Figure B. Finally, click Update and close the window. If Windows returns you to the previous screen, just select the Remind Me Later option. When the wizard is finished, reboot the system.
Using a WMI scriptAlthough the registry editing process is effective, it can be tedious and impractical if you need to change the product key on more than a few machines. So Microsoft provides two WMI scripts, one for XP machines with SP1 and one for XP machines without SP1.
For example, if you wanted to change the product key on an XP machine without SP1 and had already saved the script to root directory on the C: drive, you would click Start | Run and enter the following command:\C:\changevlkey2600.vbs xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
This wikiHow teaches you how to bypass the trial version of Windows XP, either by using a stock product key or by using software to display your own product key. Note that you should only use the following information if you are unable to activate even though you have a legally-purchased copy of Windows XP.
I've a laptop which has a Windows Vista licence sticker on it, but it was downgraded to Windows XP due to reasons. However, the HDD is broken (read errors and bad sectors everywhere) and it will not boot to windows without freezing. And to make matters even worse, it's a 1.8" ZIF HDD.
So, by any means necessary I booted to a Windows XP installation similar to Ubuntu Live CD, downloaded ProduKey, opened it and selected a source for ProduKey to look into by pressing F9 and selecting "Load the product keys of external Windows installations from all disks..." and simply pressed ok.
Load product key information from another operating system on the same computer. The [Windows Directory] specifies the base folder of Windows installation, for example: c:\windows, c:\winnt This feature is only supported on Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista/7.
but i read on the internet that one can change the product key AFTER the installation..so i thought that in the installation, i use another key, but then using the tool from microsoft in order to change the product key to my own licence key..but i am not sure if that will work.
On RETAL (non-Dell OEM) copies of Windows XP the Product Key is only associated with the specific disc. You can't use the disc to install and use a different product key. If the disc has already been used and the product key activated with Microsoft (and the PC is still active) that eliminates that disc for (legal) installation.
The Dell product key is only associated with a Dell Windows XP disc and the disc must be the same XP version and Service Pack. However, on a Dell disc you should not need the product key to install with a Dell disc.
hmm..would it be possible that i can ask dell to send me one windows xp disk service pack 2? i mean i purchased this dell laptop some years ago, but there was not even a recovery disk, just windows pre-installed and that product key..^^
